What Size Gate Post Do I Need For My New Electric Gate.

What size gate post is ok for installing a solar gate.

Good question, did you know that most of the gate kits in world are installed on a square 100mm post. That is because most gates in Italy and the UK are aluminium  so light in weight and usually not that wide. 

Australia is very different. The majority of kits get installed onto pipe and mesh farm gates. Some gate posts are 120mm pine pole, some are 200mm pine pole and I had one the other day that was 300mm round wooden post. That is why Australia is different. Maybe less than 30% installs are on single or double aluminium gates on 100mm or 120mm square steel posts. That is easy. What about the 300mm round wooden post.

Where does the bracket go on a 300mm round post.

The installation is very different. Because the motor hang bracket is usually 90 degrees to the closed gate, if you do that with 300mm post, the gate will only open part of the way. That is because the motor will run out of travel. This is a common problem for a large gate post that is larger than 200mm. 

The only thing you need to worry about is the distance between the pin on the end of the motor and the hinge of the gate. 

All swing gate motors are the same as far as position on the post goes.

As I said the only thing you need to do is make sure the swivel pin on the end of the motor is around 180mm from the hinge on the gate, in a straight line.. That is where it needs to be. If the end of the motor is more than that measure away from the gate hinge, the gate will not fully open.  Here are two examples.

You can see the distance is around the 180mm distance, so what about the 300mm post. Well this is how you do it.

Can you see the mount location is very different to the other picture. This is the only way to get the 180mm distance from the motor end to the gate hinge.  Sometimes is is easier to remove the long bracket between the small post bracket and the motor, and just drill a hole in the small angle bracket on the post.
